Horse Riding

Riding at Mornington in olden timesWestmeath is well known in the equestrian world, for the great variety of horse based activities, which take place in the county. Whether your interest is racing, hunting, show jumping or trekking there are activities to suit all levels of interest and expertise.

The limestone based grasslands of Northern Westmeath are noted for the breeding of steeplechasers.
Kilbeggan Races are held through the summer months over steeplechase and hurdle fences. Kilbeggan Race Course is the only soley national hunt course in Ireland.

Dining platter The race courses of Punchestown, The Curragh, and Fairyhouse are all in easy driving distance.

A visit to The National Stud and the Japanese gardens are within an hour’s drive of Mornington. If you would like to do some Horse or Pony trekking in the area Ladestown house riding stables is a twenty minute drive away.

Hunting

Fox Hunting traditionally takes place from late October to early March. The Westmeath Foxhounds and The Westmeath Harriers each meet during the season in locations throughout the county. Each pack holds a point to point in the spring each year.
